Restoring Glass Console Tables

If you have glass console tables in your home, you no doubt appreciate the beauty glass can bring to any room in your house. You likely also appreciate that over time your glass console tables are not looking nearly as beautiful as they once had.

The key to keeping your glass console tables beautiful is taking care of them from the beginning.

Prevent Damage

We all know that glass is fragile. But we don't always treat it that way when it's in a piece of furniture. It seems we think that since it is furniture, you can be rougher with it. This is a recipe to have broken glass console tables.

Instead, take measures to stop your tables from being cracked. Start with coasters for any cups that may be set down. Hard glass or china against your glass console tables is not healthy for the tables.

Next look at the other things you have been setting on those glass console tables. If you have lamps or other decorative items, you need to make sure to put something under them to stop them from scratching or banging on the glass surface.

Keep them Clean

Next, you need to keep your glass console tables clean. This is easy enough to do. Just take a little mild dishwashing detergent and mix it with warm water. Use a clean cloth to wipe the table surface with this solution then wipe clean.

If your tables are exceptionally dirty, you may want to add something more to your solution. Consider a few drops of ammonia to really clean them up and make them shine.

Polish Them

Not all people realize that you can polish glass tables. You may think that since they are glass they will just shine all their own. While they will, you can also help this along a little bit. Use a soft cloth to buff the surface of your glass console tables to really get them to shine. Make sure the cloth you are going to use is clean because anything on the cloth could scratch or streak the table.

Fix the Breaks

It's not uncommon for glass console tables to have a chip come loose. Just daily use and one hand that was a little off as it tried to put a cup on the table is enough to chip an edge or corner of one of your tabletops. The good news is that there is an easy way to fix this.

Keep the chipped piece of glass. You are going to put it back on the table. Next you need to get some clear epoxy. This usually comes in a tube that has two ingredients that you will have to mix together to create a strong sticky substance. Once you have the epoxy mix made, use it to put the chip back in place. You should then devise a way to tape the pieces together until the epoxy dries.
